Forever Blowing Bubbles

Elegant, sophisticated & luxurious. Champagne & champagne cocktails always make the drinker feel that little bit special. The following drinks are a few of our favourites from down the years.

  • Bellini

    Bellini
    --------------------------------------------------------
Born in 1948 at Harry's Bar in Venice, Italy. The Bellini is the handy work of legendary bar man Harry Cipriani. Reported to have been named after 15th Century Italian artist Giovanni Bellini whose work often contained a slight pink hue, just like the fantastic drink that bears his name.
  • Champagne Cocktail

    Champagne Cocktail
    --------------------------------------------------------
One of the founding fathers of the cocktail era & almost unchanged since it was first published in the 1862 tome "The Bon Vivant's Companion" by the "Professor" Jerry Thomas. Cognac floated on top of chilled Mercier champagne & a bitters soaked sugar cube.
  • Bucks Fizz

    Bucks Fizz
    --------------------------------------------------------
First poured sometime in 1921 at the famous Bucks Club in London. The Bucks Fizz is another classic that has hardly changed since its inception in the roaring 20's.
  • French 75

Straight Up with Style

These Granddaddies of cocktail culture are our house drinks here at Montgomery Place. Instead of merely listing the ingredients (which even we admit don't make the drinks sound that great!) we've included a bit of history/folklore/patter which we hope will give you a little insight as to why these drinks have lasted so long.

  • The Martini – Montgomery Style

    The Martini – Montgomery Style
    --------------------------------------------------------
The very personification of elegance, a drink so wrapped up in folklore & mystique that the style in which you drink it says more about your character than you can possibly imagine. The house martini is served with ice cold Tanqueray London Gin & Noilly Prat French vermouth on a 15: 1 ratio, the same ratio by which Field Marshall Montgomery liked to outnumber his opponents. We also serve them slightly smaller than you would find elsewhere but that's because we want them to remain icy cold right up until the last sip!
  • Hoffman House

    Hoffman House
    --------------------------------------------------------
The best Martini variant, the Hoffman House, is named after New York's Hoffman House which was famous for its fantastic martinis. Plymouth gin stirred with French vermouth (5:1 ratio) & lengthened with a couple of dashes of orange bitters.
  • Martinez

    Martinez
    --------------------------------------------------------
The forerunner to our bone dry beverage. The Martinez was reputedly invented in the late 19th Century by the "Professor" Jerry Thomas. JT tended the bar of the old Occidental Hotel in San Francisco and reputedly made the drink for a gold miner on his way to the town of Martinez, which lay forty miles to the east. A deliciously smooth mix of Real Old Tom gin, Martini Rosso vermouth, dry cherry liqueur & a dash of orange bitters.
  • Kangaroo

    Kangaroo
    --------------------------------------------------------
The original name for the Vodka Martini, a drink that any true cocktail aficionado just cannot come to terms with! We stir ours with Uluvka Premium Vodka, but you can have it anyway you like.
  • Manhattan

    Manhattan
    --------------------------------------------------------
Myth has it, that this great drink was created for Winston Churchill's mother at a party in New York. Now unfortunately research shows this is to be false, but it's a great story! The Manhattan was created sometime in 1870's New York City using Rittenhouse rye whiskey, sweet vermouth & bitters. Ours are made the same way
  • Sazerac Sazerac
    --------------------------------------------------------
Created at the Sazaerac Coffee House in New Orleans sometime in the 1850's. This Big Easy classic originally called for a brand of cognac called Sazerac-de-Forge et Fils. However, around 1870 a little American aphid was chewing up vineyards all over France, including those in the cognac region. Unable to find the original ingredient, Thomas Handy (the chap in charge at the time) substituted rye whiskey for cognac and what an inspired substitution it is. So, there we have it, Sazerac Rye Whiskey, stirred with sugar & Peyshaud bitters & served straight up in an absinthe rinsed glass. Quality.

Viva La Revolución!

When the United States brought in Prohibition (1919-1932) Havana became the "must visit" destination for anyone with a hankering for something stronger than a Shirley Temple . The jet set brought with them the need for luxury hotels & great bars such as the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, The Capri & the world famous El Floridita. The drinks at these bars were made using the fantastic rums of the island & the following is a list of those classics as well as our house creations.

The delights of Tequila are probably unknown to the vast majority of the UK's drinking population, who choose to treat this fantastic spirit as a form of alcoholic mouthwash. Well, we're here to change all that! Here at Montgomery Place we absolutely adore tequila & our Tres Bandidos section is all about the wonders of the agave azul whether served classically in the world's favourite cocktail, The Margarita, or mixed with new ingredients as illustrated in our inspired section.

  • Margarita

    Margarita
    --------------------------------------------------------
The World's Favourite Cocktail. Lots of people claim to have invented this, but we like the idea that Carlos Herrera made the cocktail for a lady called Marjorie who couldn't drink anything other than tequila. Montgomery Place margaritas are served using El Jimador & Briotte triple sec, on the rocks & without a salt rim.
  • Tommy's

    Tommy's
    --------------------------------------------------------
The Godfather of tequila is one Señor Julio Bermejo, who at San Francisco's Tommy's Mexican Restaurant serves up more than 200 brands of premium 100% agave tequila. The "Tequila Master" has created his own form of the classic drink which forgoes the orange liqueur & instead uses agave nectar to create a perfectly balanced cocktail. Mixed to perfection with Herradura Blanco Plata.
  • El Diablo

    El Diablo
    --------------------------------------------------------
A forgotten classic, but not here at Montgomery Place. Created by the unknown bartender in Oakland, California circa 1940, the Jalisco version of the classic "rye & dry" high ball, El Jimador is mixed with fresh lime & ginger ale given a crème de cassis float.
  • Snap Dragon

    Snap Dragon
    --------------------------------------------------------
The Snap Dragon makes use of some classic English flavours mixed with the fresh flavours of a blanco tequila. We combine together El Jimador tequila with fresh lime juice, elderflower cordial & muddled green grapes. Summer time in a glass.
  • Esencia

    Esencia
    --------------------------------------------------------
Created by Montgomery Place's Ago Perrone & inspired by his trip to Mexico. The Esencia, mixes together El Jimador Reposado & prickly pear liqueur with fresh lemon juice & pomegranate syrup.
  • Mañana Mañana

    Mañana Mañana
    --------------------------------------------------------
The perfect summer time cantina cooler. El Jimador Reposado tequila, woken up with orgeat almond syrup, soured with fresh lime & topped with a delicious grapefruit soda.

Acqua Vitae

Whiskey, known as "The Water of Life" is something that we here at Montgomery Place have a lot of love for! Along with gin, whiskey, in particular bourbon & rye, forms the backbone of the very earliest classic cocktails & it's those classics (& a few bartender favourites) that are the stimulation behind our Inspired offerings.

  • Old Fashioned

    Old Fashioned
    --------------------------------------------------------
The bartender's favourite. The Old Fashioned is the perfect cocktail to illustrate the complexities of bourbon. No one's exactly sure where this drink came from, although some people claim it was invented in a Louisville members club at the turn of century, others claim that it is simply an old fashioned way of serving whiskey. We just think it tastes great, so pick your poison & your bartender will stir it down with mineral water ice, sugar & angostura bitters.
  • Mint Julep

    Mint Julep
    --------------------------------------------------------
Another classic from the US of A & one of the first "All American" cocktails. This Kentucky speciality is definitely the drink of the Bible Belt & you can't move for them come Derby day! We take Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon, mix it with fresh mint leaves & sugar & serve as long & cold as a December morning!
  • Georgian Julep

    Georgian Julep
    --------------------------------------------------------
Hailing from the Georgian backwaters, this Julep uses cognac & peach brandy as its weapons of choice. A great tasting drink from the land of Dixie (traditional style in pewter julep cups all the way from Atlanta, Georgia).
  • Rob Roy

    Rob Roy
    --------------------------------------------------------
The Celtic cousin to the Manhattan. The Scotch version of the American classic. We use the incredible Monkey Shoulder Triple Malt whiskey with spicy French sweet vermouth to produce a fantastic alternative to the New York favourite.
  • Blood & Sand

    Blood & Sand
    --------------------------------------------------------
Named after the 1922 Rudolph Valentino movie, the Blood & Sand is a tantalising mix of Chivas 12yr, sweet vermouth, Cherry Heering & freshly squeezed orange juice. Definitely a case of "don't judge a book by its cover"!
  • Frisco Sour

    Frisco Sour
    --------------------------------------------------------
Is there a city in the States that doesn't have a drink named after it?! The Frisco Sour uses the aromatic notes of Benedictine with Chivas 12yr to really lift the drink above a regular whisky sour.
  • Monkey Fashioned

    Monkey Fashioned
    --------------------------------------------------------
The Monkey Fashioned mixes the glorious Monkey Shoulder Triple Malt whisky with Cherry Marnier, Benedictine & a dash of orange bitters.
  • Watermelon Smash

    Watermelon Smash
    --------------------------------------------------------
Created to show off the versatility of bourbon, this mix of Woodford Reserve, lemon, mint, vanilla & watermelon is a take on the classic smash using some of the most popular flavours on the market.
  • Kentucky Apple

    Kentucky Apple
    --------------------------------------------------------
Ago Perrone's Blue Grass version of the Moscow Mule. Buffalo Trace bourbon smashed with fresh apples & cinnamon sugar, topped with ginger beer & served long.
  • The Jordan Buck

    The Jordan Buck
    --------------------------------------------------------
Inspired by Woodford Reserve's Mark Jordan, the Jordan Buck is the Montgomery Place version of the classic "Rye & Dry". Woodford Reserve smashed with mint & lime juice, topped with ginger ale & treated to a Cherry Marnier float.
  • East Meets West Julep

    East Meets West Julep
    --------------------------------------------------------
Winner of the Whisky Cocktail Challenge 2005, the East Meets West is more of a smash, but hey, it tastes so good that who really cares?? Woodford Reserve shaken really, really hard with fresh pomegranate, Lebanese honey & fresh mint.
